What do you think about the new liquor Bill they want to pass for Pennsylvania?

I am on the fence. I did sign a petition at a local liquor store in Altoona, on behalf/in support of the state/government employees that will likely lose their jobs should this be approved. My only real concern is the amount of store employees, and board employees it put out of work, and out of benefits.
I find the argument that "there may be an increase in alcoholism and destruction in our neighborhoods" to be horse shit. It just as easy to go to the Spirit shop, as it is anywhere else, IMO.

On the other hand, I understand people wanting more convenience, and the possibility for it to help a community financially as more people open their own shops, or sell, that is, assuming they can afford the license and the product.

They state there is potential for about $1.1 billion in revenue that is to be placed into a special account, although there is no dictation on how this money is to be spent yet, if the bill passes. I think she they should put that money back into the community and make each town a better place, be it education, parks, roads, or whatever else is needed.

So that is my thought on it at this point, what is yours?

having grown up in Pa, it always amazed me when I went to other states after I was of drinking age and saw I could buy booze at grocery stores, gas stations, corner stores ect. Not just state stores and drive through Beer distributors.

I think both sides are exaggerating on the effects of this Bill.

They are gonna sell 1,200 wine and spirits licenses ( it was shocking to me that all of PA only has 600 state stores)

the existing beer distributors will have priority in those 1,200 licenses. I gotta think that almost all the licenses will then get bought up by beer distributors. Maybe a few by grocery stores.

so for people to paint a picture that all the sudden little mini-booze shops will "flood" the area and its gonna create a bunch of alcoholicsis dumb.

it also means that there will be little to no, new job creation from this. Just the loss of jobs for state store employees. I guess they will keep some of the stores open for awhile, for "under-served" areas.

what will become of the actual brick and morter buildings that the State Stores were in?

I do agree the hours of operation suck, it would be nice if they were open til 10 or maybe even 11 m-sat. Don't really care about sunday, everyone deserves a break. If you don't stock up, it's your own fault.

Though that is not enough for me to be ok with putting so many people out of work. Especially when this country is supposedly already facing yet another recession and the last one has barely ended.

Why is that a good thing Fairwarning, and whom exactly is it good for?

Having state-run liquor stores is dumb. Let the market dictate. Mich and Ind have price floors that booze cannot be sold for less than. Your bottle of booze may cost less now. Many of these people will find jobs in the liquor business, just in the private sector.

Then why don't you hire one to be your butler.

Yep. But why 1200? If they had no cap at all on the number of liquor licenses issued, it's hard to imagine it not being a net job gain for the state.

Mich had a similar cap on licenses, based on population. Of course when the state coffers dry up, they granted more licenses. PA is a conservative state for the most part, they will issue more when money is low.

Cammy - Why shouldn't you buy liquor on sunday? I live on the Ind-Mich border and Ind doesn't sell on Sunday. Sunday liquor sales are the best day of the week for the people on the state lines as they come across to get their fix.

I have no problem buying on Sundays, and I am certain that selling on a Sunday can be quite lucrative for the business, I was just saying if they were closed on Sundays it wouldn't bother me, cause everyone needs a day off!
Now the liquor store in Clymer on the other had, is just fokked up. Stupid ass hours, or rather, lack there of!

Clymer liquor store hours -

12-12:31 pm on Mondays and Fidays
1:11-1:14 pm onTuesdays and Thursdays
610-7 am Wednesdays
5am-607 am Saturdays
Sundays you even look at the store and you get mamed
Huge lines every day because of the limited hours, you're in there 1 minute atfter closing and they kidnap you and make you play cornhole with them for a month straight

Crazy situation going on there just glad I'm out of there.
