Why would someone retire in the US? There are so many places in Central and South America or Caribbean where you can retire. Belize comes to mind.

If someone expects to be active and be outdoors alot then I can understand wanting to be in a year round warm climate.

If you are planning on spending your retirement on a couch then Canada will be better than any foreign country for a Canadian citizen.

The south end of Vancouver Island has a comfortable climate. Winters are mild and summers are warm.

Also lots of pretty areas in the Canadian maritime provinces that are great places for Canadians to retire.

I personally don't want to live in any country where I do not already hold citizenship.

The plan isn't to retire in the US (would be impossible to do it legally), just to have a winter home there and spend 6 months minus one day. Arizona seems quite affordable, real estate-wise.

You have to think of the property taxes if you want to buy a winter home in the US. Pick a city that has no schools. Expect to pay about 2% or more of home's value yearly in property taxes. Then you have to pay for home insurance. I know you rent now but many home buyers don't factor in these costs when they buy a house.
 
I know. I make fun of my buddy who claims that he only has to pay $1000 a month on his $500k mortgage. Never mind that that's only his half of the mortgage payment, minus property/school taxes and all the other bullshit. Guy is totally buried for the next 3 decades. If his roof starts leaking he has to get further in debt. Idiot.

Ima get a house when I can afford twice the house I want.

For now, renting rocks.

Of course I can leave the country, I am also eligible to return ;-)

My only restriction worldwide is entering the US without a waiver.
I can hop a plane and live in any EU member country anytime.

Fuck the US, I'm not going out of my way to to get permission to visit that shithole anyway.

Matty if I outlive my parents I will be the owner of some very valuable Toronto real estate.

I could easily see myself retiring to northern Saskatchewan, Prince Albert or LaRonge area.

Off course you can. But realistically you are limited only to the ones you can afford to live there. It's very expensive living in Europe.

True.

But I can handle cold weather, so living in a socialist place like Norway is an option.

I don't need to live in Italy, Spain or France. Sweden or Norway would probably suit me better.

Won't ever happen though, I have no desire or reason to ever leave Canada permanently. Zero.

I am very happy to be a Canadian citizen and resident. Words cannot describe how much I love it here.

The best part of any vacation for me is returning to my home soil.

I have only good words for the US government. They gave me citizenship and have fostered me on their soil for the last 20 years. If you don't mess with them they are generally nice to you.

They treat guests as criminals. Visitors are finger printed entering the country, when foreign countries implement the same standards on American visitors to their country the American government gets its panties in a bunch.

I've already visited most of the US states and I no longer have any desire to travel there.
Better value for me and less hassle in other countries, that's just how it is.

America was fun for a while but now I'll go elsewhere. The fact that I require a visa to enter the US means there is no chance I'll comply with the requirements in order to visit.
