I have a friend who runs a non-profit charitable sort of company who needs cash and is thinking about selling a guitar. He is asking me (and I have no idea) the best way to get max $$$ for it fairly soon.

He is asking about online auctions (I have never participated in one) or even more specifically, an online charity auction (again, no clue here).



Regarding the guitar, in his words:

I won a Gibson Les Paul Guitar special edition reissue of the famous 1957 gold top and worth several thousand dollars apparently. It is very pretty and has never been played.




Never been played? Wot? C'mere a minute with that guitar.

Any thoughts on what he should do?
 
best way to maximize the $ is to leave it in consignment at a store. Prolly won't be quick though. No idea about charity auctions, I just know that selling on eBay has become a rip-off for non-power-sellers. He'll get fair value on eBay, but the fees are going to add up to several hunnerd bucks on that guitar.

Kijiji is filled with bums/lowballers, but yeah, he might as well list it everywhere at once. Craigslist and Kijiji.

Either way selling this guitar for maximum dollorz ain't gonna be quick. The market for high-end reissues is pretty small,mostly older guys/wealthy retirees.
 
Yeah I think Kijiji is littered with flippers to be honest with you. I listed my old car on Kijiji a couple months ago and a few people who checked it out were definitely the low ball flipper types. It's still a good site to buy/sell stuff on though.

Just be prepared to get offers to trade the guitar for a comic book collection, or FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS CASH TODAY I CAN COME PICK IT UP RIGHT NOW CALL ME.

I would like to just buy it and keep it but I am not in a great position for that sort of collecting these days.

Here's a question: I am kind of freaked out about this never-been-played angle. Would it lose value if someone played it?
 
Not really. It lost some value already cause it's probably not going to come with a retailer's warranty, but as long as it doesn't show visible playing wear (which it wouldn't unless it was played regularly for weeks), it's as good as new.

It would be best if the original hangtag was still on it - then the seller would have definitive proof that it was never played for any significant amount of time, but as long as the paint job is intact and the frets show no wear, it's not really an issue.

If he's willing to take $2k I'll buy it off him. Seriously.
