Since Mudcat posted his coffee lid technique tip a while back I have not been able to forget it.

Now every fucking time I get a coffee to go and I flip the little tab up the little voice in my head ALWAYS chimes in and says:

"Plommer, remember what Mudcat said about the proper way to drink a takeout coffee is to push the tab down and in to the cup, common!"

Fuckin Mudaaaaay!
I'll never be able to go back to my old coffee cup ways thanks to him.

Hmm. I thought it was intended to be put up. Thus, the clip at the top...

What am I missing here? Doesn't the tab getting in the way cause irregular and unpredictable flow issues as opposed to predictable flow dynamics?

I am officially not a fan of this practice.

It's meant to be put up, but Mudcat's breakthrough discovery does work as advertised - it prevents spillage when one is walking around with a full cup, yet the coffee still flows normally, from the sides, when you tilt the cup.

Consider me impressed.

In another thread, Muddy was saying that there are no issues with flow dynamics like one would think..

Think about it - you drink hot coffee in small sips. Even if you cover most of the opening, as is the case here, the maximum flow of coffee is way higher than what the human mouth can tolerate.

The value of the flap-down method is especially high during the early stages of coffee consumption, since any vertical motion of the cup is sure to send some coffee flying. This novel positioning of the flap mitigates the risk of heat injuries and coffee stains on clothing.

Mudcat is ahead of his time - widespread recognition may only come posthumously, but it will come.

I contend that this methodology is only appropriate for clutzes and people with no regard for logic!

Logic schmlogic. The greatest discoveries tend to be fortuitous.

It felt counterintuitive when I did it, and it took a couple of attempts to get it completely down as was depicted in Mudcat's guide, but in the end I'm glad I persevered.
