NEW YORK (AP) - "Catcher in the Rye" author J.D. Salinger has died at age 91 in New Hampshire.

The author's son, in a statement from the author's literary representative, says Salinger died of natural causes at his home. He had lived for decades in self-imposed isolation in the small, remote house in Cornish, N.H.

"The Catcher in the Rye" with its immortal teenage protagonistthe twisted, rebellious Holden Caulfieldcame out in 1951 during the time of anxious, Cold War conformity.

Salinger wrote for adults, but teenagers all over the world identified with the novel's themes of alienation, innocence and fantasy.

In later years, Salinger become famous for not wanting to be famous, refusing interviews.

HE WAS OLD

Potentially fascinating story. It is possible he has written any number of books that have not been released during his period of reclusion. There could be a whole flood of new material.

I mean, I'm just speculating. I haven't heard anything to that effect. Maybe he just sat and watched Oprah all those years.

Very good writer anyway. I think I read everything he has published. I have a few of his books on my shelf.

I read Catcher in the Rye. It made me want to assassinate John Lennon. Good thing he was already dead.

Mel Gibson shot me one time because I was reading 'Catcher in the Rye.'

What a dick!!!
