I think it's the style of music you like. Joy Division only released two CDs (well not CDs back in the day) that are better than New Order's best two CDs over 25+ years. Technique was really good, though.
During Joy Division, Ian Curtis was the primary songwriter. Well, he wasn't very good at it and then he decided that he wasn't very good at life either so he offed himself.
When he died, Bernard Sumner had to step up and write songs and it turned out he was much better at writing songs.
