Your feet may swell when you drink alcohol because it causes a condition known as edema to occur. Edema is caused by excess fluid that becomes trapped in the tissues. It can affect any part of the body. It is more noticeable within the feet, ankles, legs, and arms. Some people will find that they are allergic to many types of alcohol, which will bring on an attack of edema. Swelling after drinking alcohol can also be a symptom that liver cirrhosis is occurring. This is a chronic condition in which the liver cells are hardening and dying. This will keep the liver from functioning properly and can lead to liver failure.

Cirrhosis of the Liver

Know the Warning Signs of Cirrhosis

Cirrhosis is defined as a scarring process where liver cells are replaced or destroyed and are unable to function. Cirrhosis can be caused by many different factors. Alcohol is only one of many causes of cirrhosis. The most common causes of cirrhosis in the world are the viruses such as Hepatitis B and Hepatitis C.

When the liver does not function properly, patients may experience one or more warning signs. Abnormal liver function is a warning sign of cirrhosis that is measured by a blood test. Examples include:

  • "thin" blood (An increased or prolonged prothrombin time – also called a P.T. – this test is now also defined as an "INR." The INR number increases as the liver fails.)
  • high bilirubin – greater than 2.0 mg/dL is a concern
  • low albumin – less than 3.5 mg/dL is a concern
  • low cholesterol – less than 100 mg/dL is a concern
  • low platelets – less than 100,000 is a concern (Platelets are cells involved in blood clotting.)
When the liver does not function properly, patients may experience other warning signs. Please notify your hepatologist or liver specialist if any of these symptoms occur:
  • Swollen feet
  • Swollen abdomen (ascites)
  • Confusion (encephalopathy)
  • Progressive memory loss
  • Difficulty sleeping during the night and increased sleeping during the day
  • Vomiting blood
  • Passing blood, purple or black bowel movements
  • Yellow eyes and/or skin
  • Flapping of the extended hands (asterixis)
  • Muscle loss
Note: Worsening signs of cirrhosis included bloody or tarry stools, vomiting blood, and/or worsening signs of encephalopathy such as severe confusion, drowsiness, disorientation, or coma. Please seek immediate medical attention in your local Emergency Room if these symptoms occur.

check on your heart... when your heart isnt pumping properly, your circulation is fucked and your feet begin to swell too... everyone ive ever known/seen/read about with heart issues, has had swollen feet

Could it possibly the first signs of gout?

It could also depend on what type of booze you are drinking... Beer and red wine are the worst for me. I can really feel fucked up the next day if I drink either of those. No doubt has something to do with yeast and tannins.

holy shit

Plommer just diagnosed Stevie with black liver

I'm sure it's nothing major and I don't have black liver  I was very specifically spoken to by a couple of doctors after the fall about some things

Could be something to the BP, it runs in my family, will have to head in or Cami will have my head lol

i think gout is pretty much pain starting in the big toe and when worsens, goes to the ankle... i get it every once in a while... i take acidophilus for it... never really had any foot swelling from it...im sure it happens though

Why Do My Feet Smell After I Drink Alcohol?

Your feet may smell after you drink alcohol because it may cause a condition known as "stinky socks".

Stinky socks occurs after a 3 or 4 day binge of drinking heavily / passing out and not bathing or removing your shoes.

There is a correlation between the type of alcohol one drinks and the likelihood of stinky socks.

If you drink after shave, mouthwash, or hand sanitizer in order to get drunk, the likelihood you have stinky socks is 100%.

Oh so thaaaaaaaat's what the problem has been.

Thanks again.

Stevie, I'm obviously kidding about the socks stuff but I see a few of the local drunks around town here in Windsor and know they drink hand sanitizer diluted with water to get a drunk on.

They go to the hospital emergency room and will snatch a bottle off the wall to drink.

Addiction can be quite the cunt.

Lol I know man it's all good, good looking out.

Anything that breaks up our routine pisses me off is all
