Im trying to think in the recent past. Seems that Leafs haven't had really slick creative players. Even when they were good.

The Leafs haven't been good in the recent past. They have missed the playoffs something like 7 of the last 8 years.

Even if you get into the not-so recent past, it is hard to find much you can really call "good."

"Not completely horrible" would be the most you could say and it only happened a few times. The team hasn't been in a Stanley Cup final in almost 50 years.

Seriously, a questionable referees call in a semi-final like 20 years ago is a franchise high point. People never stop lamenting it. They got nothing else.

There is too much media attention surrounding the Leafs and most really good players will try as hard as they can to avoid having to play for Toronto. Great players can just as easily be playing somewhere where the weather is warm and the press is not putting everything they do under a microscope.

It can also take a star and make him a mega-star.

Carlyle said he thinks there will be more blue and white jerseys in the crowd than red and white for the New Years day winter classic.

Wouldn't surprise me.

It would me. Detroit is basically a Canadian market in terms of hockey coverage. There are an awful lot of Detroit fans in the Windsor-Sarnia area. I expect it to be 70-30 Detroit fans.

"Collins estimated that 40,000 of the 105,500 tickets the league sold for this Winter Classic were purchased by Ontario residents."

I would put the total number of Canadian residents at well over 55,000.

There are alot of Detroit fans in Windsor/Sarnia - true, but there are millions more Leaf fans in the Toronto area only a few hours away. Many will make the trip.

There are also alot more Leaf fans across Canada than Red Wing fans - I would imagine many of them will make the trip as well.

News here in Windsor was that there were long waits at the border into Detroit yesterday, related to the hockey game.

I remember them being very solid in the mid 90's. They beat the Makarov/Larionov Sharks in the 2nd round that one year and were in general respectable contenders every year with that very dignified looking Pat Burns as coach.
But even then the star players were kinda grungy Gilmour,Wendel Clark.

Yes! Thats Maple Leaf (and Canadian) hockey, pal.

Fuck I miss those guys.

PS: I made a pretty decent wager on Toronto today @ +115 (Pinny) only because they have been good to me on the road as dogs.

How many hockey fans do you think there are in Michigan? If 40,000 come across, there are still over 70,000 Red Wings fans. As close as I am to Chicago, it's still 80/20 red wings fans here. I'm 75 minutes from downtown Chicago and can't get the Hawks games without the Center Ice plan.

Yeah, I guess that with this game being a special event alot more locals will attend than if it were just another regular season game.

Toronto will be well represented though.

Felix the Cat in net.

Another example of a young Leaf player pushed out. Felix was playing well before Ken Dryden came along and fucked things up by signing Cujo because he bumped into him at a local Mac's convenience store and had a conversation in the parking lot. True story.
