Funny Games is an almost shot by shot remake of the original that was released in 1997. Both versions were directed by Michael Haneke so why a remake? After watching both of them, even the subtle differences in the actors and their roles made the remake worth while.
The plot without giving to much of the movie away is simple. A family goes to their summer cottage where 2 young men mentally and physically torment them. Imagine a home invasion done in a slow, drawn out manner. Every scene is played out with nervous anticipation. The 4th wall is broken in this movie with expertise. The monotone affection in the antagonists voices is unnerving.
Their is a shocker of an ending. Many people that have seen this film have said it is one of the hardest films to sit through. As a fan of the horror genre, I found this movie terrifying on levels not usually associated with horror. To many thrillers go for the cheap scare or paint by numbers ending. This movie does not. If you are not uncomfortable with a thriller/horror that makes you cringe at the sight of the unseen, this movie is worth seeing.
Either version is worth catching. I know Netflix has the German one available for instant streaming.
If anyone else has seen it, tell me what you think.
