I’ve always been into dark and disturbing films. The crazier and darker the better. This is my personal top 5 list. If any of you have seen any of these, please share your experiences watching them.
5. Funny Games- The original and the remake are pretty much a frame by frame duplicate. That said, the original hits just a bit harder for the rawness in which it was filmed. The movie is about a home invasion that takes on a nasty turn with a very nasty ending. Not gory per se but the ending will leave you questioning the moral fiber of people.
4. Threads- Originally a BBC movie about the after effects of nuclear war, this movie was the 80s equivalent to the American movie The Day After. This film though is SO much more disturbing. It’s dark throughout. The ominous waiting for the bomb to hit leads into the after effects days, months and even years later. I took a shower after watching it to clean off the grime it left in my head.
3. Happiness- A Todd Soldenz movie that explores his favorite topic, suburban life. What makes this film disturbing is every character has a demented flaw that is developed in the most dark ways whilst adding humor. At times I felt bad laughing which made me even more disturbed. Great film. Hard to find on streaming though.
2. Salo- You want a movie where castration is the easiest thing to watch? This movie is it. What can I say about a movie whose plot is a bunch of elite Nazis torture kids throughout. Let me just say this movie was my most disturbing until I saw……
1. A Serbian Film- Ex porn star is offered a role he cannot turn down. What transpires is shit that will give you nightmares. It’s way better than it should be and it’s also a movie you’ll never rewatch. Let me just say the ending will fuck with you and then refuck you. I won’t give it away but I’ll just say….fuck.
