Brother of Terri Schiavo calls for Fox to cancel Family Guy

Terri2 As word began to spread this week that the Fox animated comedy Family Guy had aired a musical parody of Terri Schiavo's death, her relatives in St. Petersburg were still trying to understand why.

Next Wednesday will mark the fifth anniversary of the death of Schiavo, who fell into a persistent vegetative state after collapsing in her St. Petersburg home in 1990. Her husband Michael fought a protracted court battle against members of her family and several conservative groups to win the right to discontinue life support for her in the mid 2000s; her feeding tube was disconnected in 2005.

Family_guy_cast-1123 On Sunday, Family Guy aired an episode featuring children in an elementary school performing "Terri Schiavo: The Musical," with lines such as "Terri Schiavo is kinda alive-o" and "(She's) the most expensive plant you'll ever see."

Bobby Schindler Jr., Schiavo's brother, said the charitable foundation named for his sister hopes to enlist the aid of other advocacy groups to protest the episode and perhaps see some sponsors end support of the show.

"What was really upsetting was that someone sent the link to my mom...not to be mean, but to show her what was going on," said Schindler. "I thought she was going to start crying. She doesn't understand it -- and I wish the producers could have seen her reaction. It rips your heart out."

Since Schiavo's death, the foundation which bears her name has spearheaded efforts to oppose the kind of decisions which ended her life, calling them "euthanasia" and "medical killing." The group is planning a fifth anniversary concert in Indianapolis Ind. on April 11 with country stars Collin Raye and Randy Travis.

But one of the venues which offered the Schindler family a fair amount of support during the fight over Schiavo's feeding tube may not be so friendly this time. The Fox News Channel is a sister company of the network which aired Family Guy, Fox.

Still the foundation issued a press release condemning the episode and Schindler hopes to organize more specific protests in the days to come. (on Wednesday, they also issued another press release urging sympathizers to contact Fox directly, with executives names, phone numbers and email addresses provided.)

Their response contrasted sharply with the reaction of the son of legendary infomercial pitchman Billy Mays when he was satirized on South Park after his death last year ("It's all fine by me," Billy Mays III said then)

"I'd like to see the show go off the air," said Schindler, noting that -- even though the family had ignored other parodies in the past, this time they wouldn't overlook it. "There's a clear prejudice that exists toward people like my sister Terri...people just want them to die."

(Bread's Note: If her retarded Jesus freak family would've just allowed Terri to die, instead of shitting herself for almost 20 years, then shows like Family Guy would've never even bothered with the topic.)

I wish I could see it for myself, apparently filthy Canadians aren't allowed.

I always thought they finally did the right thing in killing the plant. All of those do gooders who are scarred that they might be next, should be if they are brain dead. There is no use for anyone who is brain dead, and even God lets vegetables rot.

Not referring to this case - which is quite clear cut but where do you stand on euthanasia? To me it is one of those intractables (a bit like the death penalty), I am in favour both in principle but there are so many pitfalls/drawbacks.

If someone is terminal and would rather not suffer and wilt away, I'm all for it.

People are considered cruel if they keep a pet around way after its time and it suffers. One can even be prosecuted for it.

But yet we are all forced to watch our loved ones get eaten away by disease.

LOL, religion.

I'm in favor of a very measured and rigorous implementation of euthanasia and vehemently opposed to the death penalty. Bread made an excellent comparison with suffering pets, I couldn't have said it any better. As far as the death penalty, I'm not convinced we can ever ascertain someone's guilt to a degree that guarantees that capital punishment is indeed a just crime. I certainly think we should put all prisoners to work to offset the cost of incarceration, but we can't let state-sanctioned murder become an economic decision.

RS, I think prolonged incarceration is the economic decision. That is it creates wealth for powerful interests. You hear about how much it costs to keep someone imprisoned for a year. It's usually some large sum that if you'd just give it to the inmate, most would never commit a crime again. But who gets this money? It's another great scheme, excuse to transfer public $ to the rich, and expand business, while keeping people in check and fleecing them for all they're worth.

btw, I don't mean to imply that I'm in favor of the death penalty as it stands.

I know I am a bleeding heart but I mean come on where do you draw the line?

Ok some fool does something stupid make fun of it. Some celebrity gets caught with his or her pants down, make fun of it. A public figure gets caught on camera or in public making an ass of themselves make fun of it. I can see the humor in other peoples embarrassments but death? While the contriversary surrounding the whole pulling the plug debate had merrit from a right to life type of argument I don't see where it is justifiable to make a parody of it. I mean that was someones daughter who is now dead. Do we not have any moral compass as a society?
