I would say 98% of the NHL teams could not play defense the way Canda played in Sochi. Remember Canada is stacked at EVERY position. We could have iced 3 competitive teams. 2 for sure woudl have medaled. NHL teams do not have that kind if depth in their system/team. You can't play that kind of hockey if you don't have those kinds of players. Now, most teams have 2 good defensive players, but I woudl say 5-6 teams have defensive STUDS. There was not a single defensive stud (minus Suter for the U.S. and he's a borderlien stud) on any other team in Sochi.

Or like Sochi, just knock the net off when the heat is on which will result in no goals. That rule is so dumb. That rule kind of boggles my brilliant hockey mind.

 :awesome:

Getting them to play it consistently is the problem. As I said, most teams don't have the personnel to play that way. You'd have to play your back end at least $40 million in salary.

well, they have enough to do it against weaker competition than what was in the Olympics. Same difference.

Puck control, using all 3 zones. Passing the puck back. Exiting zone voluntarily perhaps. I can't believe there isn't a way to counteract this bullshit. At least sit there like the Flyers did against Tby.

With an 82 game schedule and a diluted talent talent base due to excess expansion a team has a better chance to winning playing a tight defensive style rather than trying to outgun an opponent.

Fiver, I am impressed. You and I kind of think alike here. Take the Leafs for example. Ron Wilson had them playing a run and gun system with players who weren't run and gun. Carlyle comes in with his hybrid system and they make the playoffs and are a better team because of it.

The NHL became totally watered down because of expansion. in the 90's, you saw tons of hooking and obstruction because of inferior players could play with the Lemiuex's and Gretzky's of the game. Fuck Lemieux actually called it a garbage league. I always said that Jr. aged players coming out of Jr (with the exception of a few) should be forced to play in the AHL to further develop their skills. Of course Gary didn't listen to me, but that's another story. Teams basically rushed their drafted "kids" and most of them failed to remain in the league for a long time.
