Watched a documentary today on NetFlix about a town called Mallison and it's high school football program. In it they made mention of players being held back in the 8th grade so that they would be older seniors one day for the football program.

The parents were on board with this practice because this entire town is football crazy for this high school program. Obviously some of the staff denied it but when you have players and parents saying what happened and they aren't trying to sue someone or anything you tend to believe there is some truth to it.

Maybe I am naive to what it is like in towns where they take this so seriously but the thought of holding a kid back for the sole purpose of improving a high school team is crazy to me. Recruiting players is the norm and even around here where high school football is basically just something to do but red shirting?

Wally, this practice has been happening in NJ for quite awhile involving football and basketball! The purpose from what I know is cause the parents of the kids feel like by being physically more mature by their senior year in high school gives their kids a greater chance of getting a full paid ride at a college! Your talking bout 100-150K or more savings in money spent! Sounds crazy to me but people do what they have to when it comes to money!

I knew a couple kids that did this for basketball in my town....but the teachers had nothing to do with it... the parents were able to "request" they repeat a grade in 6th or 7th and I guess the schools went along with it

we were both basketball and football crazy but, I don't know of anyone that did it for football.

I don't think i'm for or against it.....

I'm more against Kids illegally transferring within districts by using fake home addresses (living with Aunt or friend ect)

by the same token I went to a Private school for 6th-8th grade to play for a power house jr. high basketball team.

we were disappointments and lost the state title my 8th grade year

Like I said I was naive t this and hearing you two talk about it makes it seem like a common practice.

I understand where the parents are coming from in regards to best enabling their kids getting a full ride and all. Just amazed that his is going on and apparently not frowned upon even.

just thinking about the practice... and thinking about that team I was on..

we had a 6'7-6'8.5 inch 7th grader on our team. (he grew almost two inches from the start of November to the end of January)

and he sucked then, except he block everything in sight and had rebounded every miss and could dunk a bit.

anywho, he grew to a near 7 foot and was really good and going to some big ten school on a full ride, and I was off at college and the 2nd weekend of school he was in a car accident (he was drinking and driving) and was paralyzed from the waist down.

guess he got into drugs and drinking alot that previous summer. which is a shame, but common because he was a preacher's kid....

never heard of that around here
although most of the public schools dont need to hold players back, they accomplish that on their own
but once in HS getting passing grades just cause your on the team does happen...
I had a teacher give me a passing grade so I continue to play the 2nd half of my senior yr

this past weekend my sons team played agaisnt a team w/ a 13 yr old... in a 9-10 yr old league
shady stuff going on w/ the neigboring city we play

I know a lot kids when they went to prep schools for hockey that repeated a grade. My buddy went to a top new England prep school after his sophomore year, and his aid package was based on the fact that he would repeat his sophomore year.

when a kid 'fails' a grade or is held back at the parents' request, the same parent should have to foot the entire bill for an extra year with their kid clogging up the system. we'll see then if the parents are all on board with such a moronic idea and practice.

made this video for ya wallybubbles, when I remembered i'd just moved a bunch of old junk including some old team pictures that bigal wanted me to throw out instead of bringing to her place. she let me keep one, and I kept my jr high bball team photo cuz its funny.

here is 13 year old archie and 6'7 12 year old guy

enjoy your song

Cool Arch.

Arch, everytime you do a video for some reason I am constantly searching for signs of body parts or the distant screams coming from a locked door and I'm never 100% sure you're not gonna whip out your kok. Thanks for not doing that by the way.

Wally, I try to think of myself more as a poor man's Dexter type killer.

I pick thugs, and ho's (not hard around here), so they aren't like murderers and pedophiles always

I'm not good at covering my tracks, but I don't need to be with the amount of investigations put into hood murders

I don't stalk, it is usually in a fit of anger/revenge...often from driving incidents

Wally, if people had integrity like you and didn't hit and run there would be a lot less murders in my hood

If you fail a grade in school you should be forced to spend the next year at the retard school so your kid should learn the lesson of studying and doing his homework instead of practicing hitting and getting hit in the head playing football.

Not the point buddy! Hasn't nothing to do with their grades! Some kids are probably A students!

I'm not sure where I stand on this thing now. Originally I was 100% against it but after MrMonkey mentioned it enabling kids to get scholarships that might otherwise miss out I had to re-think it.

Ethically it still seems wrong though even if it could be for the greater good.
