Ral Gonzlez, or just Ral as he's generally known, has today been linked with a move from Real Madrid to the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer. Ral has been a legendary figure at Real Madrid, the only club he has played for in his professional career, and in his 17 years there he has notched up records for leading goal scorer for Madrid (321 goals), the national team (44) and in the Champions League (60). A move to New York for Ral would be the biggest for MLS since David Beckham signed for the Los Angeles Galaxy.

It is unusual for someone to have such a long career at Real Madrid considering the big spending and revolving door policy they have each summer but this season he has fallen somewhat out of favor and is unable to hold down a regular first team place. Ral's current contract runs out in 2011 but it is understood that Madrid are willing to release him early bearing in mind the size and quality of their squad. His wages are in the region of $150,000 a week which don't seem to be putting off his potential suitor.

This afternoon, a Red Bulls spokesman said there was “no truth” in the reports. However the Red Bulls GM earlier in the week couldn't contain his excitement at signing any out of contract players from the powerhouses of Barcelona or Real Madrid. And the Bulls certainly do need some help after a MLS worst 5-19-6 record as well as scoring a league worst 0.9 goals per game; bizarrely their goal tally at home placed them 2nd in the Eastern League but they only managed 3 goals over 15 away games. Adding Raul, who despite his long career is only 32, with a historical strike rate of 0.42 goals per game could be the shot in the arm that the New York Bulls desperately need.

I think he should move on. After watching his great career it is very sad to watch him now not wanted in club and country. :fro:

I have to say that a couple of years ago Raul looked washed up, done.
He has had a real resurgence though.

On the assumption he does not stay at Real, a move to another Spanish team is out of the question. A couple of years in the MLS might make sense.

Why would he want to come here? I love soccer but don't pay any attention to the MLS.

I wait for the day some European make the trek to South America, I would love to see him in Brazil.

All great players are returning like Adriano, Fred, Robinho, Roberto Carlos, Vagner Love. I think Raul would fit very nice among them.

He did play in Brazil once. When Real played the 2000 World Club Championship that was held there. The year they won La Octava.

I think it's as simple as he wants to play regularly; he can sit on the bench for 2 years in Madrid or try to turn the New York ship around. I think he's said before that he fancied a move to MLS at some point.

Yeah I guess. Maybe he wants to live in the states. A couple of years living in New York is not a bad thing.

I think the disparity in the money is just too big for this to happen, Jota.
Could you honestly see Kaka or Messi playing in Brasil/Argentina at the moment, let alone Cristiano Ronaldo?

I understand that its a money problem, someone will have to do it for the passion. If I was a player I would love to play for Boca Juniors or River Plate or Flamengo. Someone will do it one day.
