My wife didn't go back to work until our youngest went to pre-school. What you lose in income now you make it up in well behaved kids in the future. You can see a huge difference between the behavior of our kids and kids who were raised in daycare centers.

Yeah, I'd rather have her stay home, but am afraid she'll never be able to get another job after a bunch of years off the market.

It's not like she has a real job to begin with.

Postdocs are glorified slaves.

Well discuss it with her. Do you plan to have more kids? If yes, it makes sense for her to be a home mom until they go to school. If you are happy with one then the daycare could work. Just make sure you spend as much time as you can with him when he is home because he will demand your attention.

With my first I had to go back to work after only 6 weeks. I spent every waking minute with her when I wasn't working, and she is one of the most well mannered kids I know, very sweet. Family helped a lot which I am sure had some affect on her behavior. My youngest I stayed home with. She is slightly more hyper, but still, sweet kid. I think it just all depends on how you interact with them when they are with you. (speaking generally). If Bacon and I have a kid, I will keep the child home with me and try to work as much as I can around their sleep/feeding/wake schedule, and I am sure once they start to crawl around I will have to put them in daycare.

I prefer daycares that are more like pre-preschools as opposed to a place that just watches them play.
