Nebraska (2013) - It was the last of this year's Best Picture nominees for me.
Here they are in order I would vote for them (which has nothing to do with expected results):
Her
Dallas Buyer's Club
Philomena
American Hustle
The Wolf of Wall Street
12 Years a Slave
Nebraska
Captain Phillips
Gravity
Nothing I find bad on the list. Nebraska was okay. 6.4 ish I think. Kinda lacklustre in some ways.
Also I would not have nominated Bruce Dern for best actor. Just a really easy role that any old guy could have done just as well. Hard to screw up really.
I have heard talk how he should be rewarded for his lifetime body of work. That is one of the most ridiculous lines of thinking I can imagine. First of all, I never think body of work should be factored into an award - just look at the performance. But if you really must think that way, give your head a shake. Like Henry Fonda finally getting an Oscar for on Golden Pond, okay, I get it. Paul Newman was not that good in Road to Perdition but extraordinary career so fine.
Those were top guys in their field for a long period of time. Hall of Famers. They should have an Oscar, one could posit. Bruce Dern is peripheral hammy support. He is a .200 hitter who just happened to not die.
Lifetime achievement of Bruce Dern.
