Seems like a decent guy. While I am not in 100% agreement with his choices of causes to support monetarily, I like a lot of them and I certainly like his general philosophy.

As for his method of suicide - the big jump - it is definitely not my favorite. But I guess he didn't land on anyone. Hopefully he didn't traumatize anyone.

He has given to a lot of other local organizations/premier center/hospital but insists on naming or renaming everything to Sanford this or that. This is how he made his money.

Should he be lauded or criticized?
 
I think people around here have mixed emotions. I think the biggest criticism is him wanting his name all over the place. I think most of his dontations come with conditions about naming. One of our hospitals was Sioux Valley forever and when he gave money they had to change the name and what a PITA that was. I just think you should give out of the goodness of your heart without expectations of tribute. Maybe I am missing something.
 
To me that is the tiniest of complaints compared to the good being done. If someone gives me a million dollars cash, I don't complain about the denominations of the bills.

Also, there is a reasonable argument to be made that it is better being very public with that sort of giving. While it seems good and spiritual and everything to just give anonymously - a lot of loud publicity is more likely to get attention and possibly encourage others. That is a good thing.

Warren Buffett and Bill Gates going on 60 Minutes about their foundation does a lot more good than whispering behind closed doors.

Ehh, or maybe the guy's just got an ego. A lot of people do. I'm not perfect and I don't expect it from anyone else.
 
The good he is doing was made off the subprime credit market. with %36 interest rates and other fees.

Actually I misspoke when I said before the biggest problem people had was about naming rights. The biggest problem people have with him is about how he made his money. Seems like he is a prime example of the type that most GL posters want to crucify....a little surprised at your response.

Doesn't seem any more immoral to me than governments running lotteries.

But whatever, let's say there is nothing to debate and he made his money in a completely heinous way. Then I guess he has good and bad in him and should be criticized for one thing and praised for another.

I was just looking for discussion....not going to rate Denny Sanford's "morality." Mostly this was to tie into the FS thread (and get rwhich had turned into a thread about charitable giving, and if the good one does absolves them of living a driven life. bwah. Fa la la la la.

Agree with Muddy 100%. Fuck, Canadian Tire has high interest cards adn give cash advances. Christ, most major if not all banks do.

Did you read the above article? Of course most banks have high interest rates these days...but this is/was usury. My point is that the people who want to bitch about the capitalist fat cats making money off the the back of those at the bottom of the chain, seem to not care if they turn around and give a drop in the bucket of their money to charity. More interested in the opinion of those who were vocal in the other thread...ie, Matty, Plommer, Mr X...



I'm not a Sanford fan personally, but I'm not trying to debate his character...I just am interested in opinions.

That could be said about most of the if not all of the richest people. Peoples toes get stepped on from time to time. The Waltons - what is their legacy? They went from buying American to demanding corporations cut costs at any price to deal with them. They are a big factor in the loss of North American jobs.
