I think those were condos and they had a security desk on the first floor. I used to play chess at the 16th street mall in between the shuttle lines. It was directly across from the US Mint. I enjoyed the Tattered Cover book store as well. The only thing about right downtown was that you got asked for change nearly every other block downtown. I felt safe it was just addressing this request all the time that wore on you.

They were apartments that they made into condos I think after I left. I was there a long time ago..circa 1991... Yes..they had a security desk and some stores on first floor...dry cleaner, etc.......we used to walk down to a place called Rock Island. I liked living downtown in a way but it seemed very lonely too as I had just moved after college and didn't know anyone, but my then bf who was in Fort Morgan area.

I'll never forget the day my boss (VP) got axed. Came as complete surprise to him. I thought I was going first. Actually never saw him going...He was part owner and got sold out by a buddy. Fokking people.

Well hopefully your buddy lands on his feet. What kind of unemployment ins deal do you guys there?

You get 45% of your gross income for up to a year. Not a bad deal. And he's got those 9 weeks of gravy. And a great name on his resume, that he worked at for 3.5 years. And my boss already volunteered to give him a good reference.

He's actually in a great spot right now. He'll have zero trouble finding something else.

Bastard.

I wanna be fired.

I know that feeling!!! 45%?? Wow...Is there a cap on that? I got the max allowable here and I think it was 2k per month...which is plenty if you are not a financial nightmare like me....you can choose to have taxes taken out then or not.

Any chance they will fight the unemployment?

Whatever he did..do the same thing... Do they have employment at will in Toronto? ...meaning they can just fire you for anything?

In the private sector, you can get pretty much get fired for any reason. There are tons of employment laws, but it's easy to produce a convincing case when you want to get rid of anyone.

The maximum amount EI will pay out is 45k a year.

The employer doesn't give a crap about him getting EI or not. Employers pay into EI based on the number of active employees. (EI is paid for both by employees and employers, in an even 50/50 split.)

Damn...45k a year? That's pretty good for sitting on your ass...Is that just in Ontario or all of Canada?

What do you mean 45%? Because of EI? I'm curious.

I'm borderline insubordinate with certain colleagues, but they deserve their shit.

But if you get fired you do not get EI.

EI is a Federal insurance program so it's all of Canada, BUT the length of time you get EI depends on the employment rate in your geographic area. I doubt this dude would get 1 year of EI in Toronto. Maybe 5-6 months.

huh? If you quit, you don't get EI.

NOPE. You can get it if you get laid off. Most decent employers will give the person a "lay off" so they can collect EI. If the person was justly fired then he/she does not get EI. PERIOD. It sounds like this dude got laid off. No doubt they changed the role around as Machu mentioned and claim he no longer fits the newly created role or position and was given a lay off notice.

Machu???

I have no idea what it is here anymore but it was f'in ridiculous...like 2 years I think. I think they have tightened up some things but a few years back it was out of control.

What is the average ue rate there?

I guess there is a technicality in wording...here we day "fired for cause" versus fired which is essentially same as a layoff(for all practical purposes) but since we have employment at will states they can fire you for anything and still have to give unemployment.

Correct.

He was fired, but they were nice enough to disguise it as a layoff.
