Employees pay an unemployment tax in Canada? The employer pays that in the US.

Yes, employees pay via deduction from earnings and the employer pays 1.4X the amount of the employee.

I've done that once and it came back to bite me in the ass. I convinced my boss to fire me so I could go back to school and collect EI, which I did. Fast-forward 5 years and the CRA audited the company - it was determined that I quit on my own (which I really did). I had to pay back the full $12k I got in EI benefits and I wasn't eligible for any benefits for a 5-year period. I still shake my head just thinking about it.

That sucked.

Yeah. I got fucked cause my immediate boss AND the HR person that was involved at the time both left the company shortly after me. New HR guy had no clue and just told the govt that it looked like I wasn't fired for any valid reason.

how's that possible? 5 years later they're going to decide you weren't fired for a valid reason? Maybe the guy fired you for the fuck of it. it's not your fault. weird corporate dealings
