The right field poll is name in his honor, but started more as a joke as he hit few homeruns, and the ones he did wrapped around the poll. Lost 3 years of his career to the navy. Was great friends with Ted Williams. supposedly held the ball to long on a relay throw from the outfield in the 1946 world series, which allowed the Cardinals to score the winning run. Used to still dress in full uniform and sit in the dugout until, I think sometime in the mid 1990's when the Dan Duquette era sox leadership banned him from the dugout. Then he came back, and I think Mlb made some rule about the number of uniformed coaches allowed in the dugout.

David Halberstam wrote a great book called Teammates, about Williams, Pesky, Bobby Doerr, and Dom dimaggio.

Solid guy, great story teller, who was known to hit fungos at spring training.
