Jeff Beck's other passion: American muscle cars

Jeff Beck does, despite the obvious risk to his precious hands from big mallets and hot welding torches. "I wear gloves," Beck says, unconvincingly.

The musician's reverence for American hot rods dates back to his youth, when his parents handed him a car magazine to keep him quiet during a long train ride. "That was it for me," he says. "What was America? The car, then music. It was all one thing."

Among Beck's prized possessions is a replica of the 1932 Ford Deuce Coupe featured in 1973's American Graffiti. Another love is his 1959 Corvette "resto-rod," which combines a vintage body with modern running gear. "Purists hate it, but all the new stuff makes it so that I can actually drive the thing comfortably."

Beck is a frequent visitor to big hot-rod gatherings, where he finds himself in bidding duels with Eric Clapton. "He poached my sport," Beck says, smiling. "Get your own pastime, sucker."

Beck recalls pulling into Clapton's driveway with a hot rod. "He showed me two Ferraris. I told him: 'Anyone can buy those. These you make.' Now, he's a customer who gets in my way."

Nobody gets in Beck's way when he's building cars. "When I'm in the garage, a ray of hope comes over me," he says. "Heaven."
