no, he doesn't have to go through them with just a connection, they have an inner connection without stepping out
and correct they do make you go through security but only when coming from "questionable countries"

i guess i always come from questionable countries. like here where they strip search you 3 times and have dogs sniff you before you can fly to the usa.

Is security that bad at Ft. Lauderdale? I don't recall it. I would have back through security to get my flight, that is true. Immigration I don't have to deal with until I get to Costa Rica. Coming back hasn't been bad mostly because everyone else in line is from latin america and I'm Canadian. Homeland security has cleared me to the states until Mid February so it shouldn't be an issue.

I am not spending much time in Ft.L. I will have to look at what my layover is on the way back. I am sure it is about 5 hours. But last time it took me 2 hours to get into the USA.
