I'm from Wisconsin. Their political climate is a mess. They definitely needed to do something about the budget. I don't know that cutting education is particularly the right answer, but I don't think anyone really has a good answer at the moment. The government can't keep spending like it is. Someone has to reign it in. It's long overdue on every level. If the Dems had shown any sort of fiscal restraint when Doyle was in office, they wouldn't be in this mess. They should have been proactive rather than pushing it aside for the next person in line (just like what recently happened at the national level). Nobody wants to take responsibility for making tough decisions and cutting certain segments of government. They just want to point fingers at the other guy. That's not what they are elected for. So in that regard, I actually commend the Republicans in Wisconsin. It's about time someone did it. Now, it has to happen on the national stage so that we can get out from under the rock of debt that is piling on top of us. (over $45k per person at the moment!!!!)

Taxes in Wisconsin are outrageous as well. They've lost a ton of industry due to it.

I lived in Madison for 6 years. I have two undergrads from the UW. It's a very liberal town in a pretty conservative state. Madison is very different than the rest of the state and the reality is that its not reflective of the problems that the rest of the state endures.

I can't remember what it's called. Which is awful because I spent many a Friday and Saturday night there.

It's in Superior and had this deal where you only paid for your drink with a coin. So you could pay for the first one with a dime, the next with a penny, the next with a nickel, etc... They'd give you coloured tickets so they knew how you paid for your last one to prevent the penny roll people.

Great people, great bands, great tunes on the jukebox... I really hope it's still there. I can still map out driving there in my head once we crossed the bridge (we'd always get a room at the Best Western but ditch our car at the bar for some reason) but I really can't remember the name. It was an amazing place for girls coming from the land of provincial drinking laws though ie government set minimum amount charged per shot, beer, no happy hours, etc...

yeah, i think the deal is nobody has a popular answer right now to any of these messes in any of the states as well as the country. the part that gets me is a lot of the debt is due to these politicians having chipped in on a lot of pork/graft in the past. i've heard that about madison as well, just talking to our two friends. probably a lot like austin here in texas, always more liberals and borderline socialists in towns where the two leading industries are college football and state-fuckin-politics. perry is running on fiscal conservatism and the lord jesus christ, and i know he doesn't believe in the first part and have my doubts if he's more than a "i'll talk about god and try to confuse the flock that's listening to me" act.

Not sure why they can't just sit down and trim the pork.
 
Yes, just want we need is more liberals in the country! Let everyone man/woman be their own person and do their own thing!

Seems to me to be an escape for having defined laws to live by! People might not think they need it, but control must be in place since they can't control thenselves!
 
I was actually thinking about that exact concept last night, MrMonkey. Why are we holding people's hands through everything? They need to learn to be adults and take responsibility for themselves. When I was a wee little kid, my parents let one of our neighbors bring me to high school with her for the day. They didn't have study halls or anything of the like. It was open campus. If you didn't have a class that hour, you could leave the school and do as you please. I remember sitting on the lawn outside of the school having lunch with my neighbor and a few of her friends. That doesn't happen anymore. There was a remnant of that when I was in high school as we had open lunch and could leave the school to eat. But slowly throughout the years (and finally two years after I left), it was all taken away.

Now, kids are treated like prisoners on lockdown. They can't leave the school. They must attend study halls and go to classes or face severe consequences. Is it coincidental that the products of our society seem more and more complacent and unmotivated? You can't MAKE a kid learn. If there's anything that causes a kid to rebel, it's forcing them to do things against their will. If they are treated like adults (like generations before them), perhaps they'll act like adults, take responsibility, and do what's in their own best interest.

And that same philosophy should be applied to so many aspects of our society right now.

So the problem goes back to not handling the kids right which in turn leads to bad adults! Take off the handcuffs! Your probably right but IMO not as much to do with the schools as much as with the PARENTS not doing enough teaching to their kids!

Wait a minute, the parents both work so by necessity they leave these fine young adults to learn on their own without a leash! So why are we having more problems with our young adults?

Plus IMO as kids get older and with all the media coverage they see politicians as scumbags and these are the people who we are supposed to look up to! Who knows, it's really all so screwed up these days that I guess there must not be a correct answer!

You have society where a large portion of the population are either subjects/tools or useless altogether. This is not the fault of the public, but an intentional result of elite agenda.

It's hard to tell somebody to be responsible for themselves when all land and resources are already owned by somebody, and all you can do is follow their rules.
