That is a pleasantly cynical viewpoint but I think it is something more than that. I think there is a genuine interest and curiosity about the possibilities as they relate to money on this one.

Plus the union is interested in parlaying it into one less pre-season game and my sources tell me the league would be amenable to that.

I think there is real stuff going on. Guess we'll have to wait and see.

this was part of the discussions a year or so ago when they were putting together the next cba and owners put an expanded regular season schedule on the table. it may very well come to fruition in the future, possibly as early as 2013. the timing of goodell's announcement, however, is almost entirely to take away from the saints suspensions being lifted. not every negative insertion into a discussion is borne from cynicism.

It just seems like cynicism because of the context. Like if Goodell had released the news that they were talking about placing boxes of free money under the seats for all NFL games in December - and someone asserted that it was a deflection for PR purposes - I think I would buy that.

But to intentionally deflect one negative story with something so extremely unpopular; there is like a 70% disapproval rate for any change in the playoff format - and he knows that . . . I'm not sure how he's ahead of the game.

To me, he would be deflecting one shruggable thing with something much worse but maybe some people would stack those things up differently.

:dunno:

deflection is deflection; why bring that subject up at all now if it has such little support? the disapproval that does exist, by the way, is all about money with the addition of perhaps 2-4 playoff games meaning the loss of 16 preseason games (that tickets are priced at regular season rates). it would mean some team having just one preseason home game every other august, and the extra money from a tv broadcast in the current contracts wouldn't make up for that.

You have become too inside Bay Bud. That is not the reason for 70% disapproval among fans. Few of them are that serious and deep about this stuff. It's all about ME. I am entertained so don't mess with my stuff. I'm not balancing spreadsheets here.

Many are not even as deep as that and are just plain resistant to any change no matter what. The word change is brought up ---> resistance is the starting point. If thought comes at all, it is later.

As for Goodell's motives, in the absence of evidence/testimony, it comes down to one of these mindreading debates which I never win.

IMO if any team moves to Toronto (please DO NOT happen) it has to be the Bills! Buffalo appears to be a dead city but hopefully team will get better and die hard fans show up! Yes Muddy, once Wilson dies who knows what might happen!

Believe expansion of playoffs is almost a certainty and deduction of preseason games would help to let fans at least see a player injured for the season during a meaningful game!

My guess no way expansion to 34 teams, 8 X 4 is a good equation! LA will get a team back and my guess is it should be Jacksonville!

yeah, you're probably right. who are the teams making up the 70 percent disapproval bunch?

The poll I saw, disapproval was spread evenly across the nation including Alaska and Hawaii. They had three different colors prepared to demonstrate different results but the entire nation was one consistent disapproving color.

It was like 50 of these
