A lot of it is now just the fact that players are all 20-30lbs heavier and they are all much better skaters than they used to be; Not too, too long ago player's shifts used to be almost 2 minutes long and there was a lot less hard hitting because everyone was slower and smaller. Now, the shifts are 35 seconds all out 100% effort and the players all know how to hit. I have no clue why hitting from behind into the boards or targeting the head has been allowed for as long as it has. One way to look at it is that all these guys work together for a living and that you should not attempt to hurt a fellow employee. I understand that they are alpha male jocks but still; How can you cross-check someone from behind, face 1st into the boards. If they turned NHL into Olympic style hockey, I wouldn't be upset one bit.

good points here. These players are fucking monsters. And for whatever reason the game strategy has evolved back to the grindy, physical style we saw before the strike. Only at a faster speed. The refs need to start calling penalties every thirty seconds. The viability and integrity of the game is at stake. Expanding the rink would help, but like you say they wont do it. Fuckers need to hire somebody with a clue.

Wonder if the NHL
Would consider playing 4 on 4 fir the full game, less players more open ice should cut down on some of the hits. The players association
Probably wouldnt go for it, but not sure if they have any organization or power
