saw you wanted to play the pirates again today.... just wanted to make you aware that there is alot at stake for quite a few bad teams today. precious spots in the draft. Pirates are ALL ABOUT the draft these days.
so I wouldn't be surprised if they tank it today, the fact that they are extending a young rookie barely out of AA with an extra start and extra innings on his young arm (considering he's at a way way new record high)
tells me they aren't gonna be telling hurdle and crew to pull out all the stops.
here is the breakdown of what can happen with the bad teams including your Marlins
Depending on the outcome of today's games, the Pirates could end up drafting anywhere from 6th to 10th next year. If nothing changes, they'd draft 8th. Here's a guide:
Pirates: They have 72 wins and will win all tie breakers by virtue of having MLB's worst record in 2010. With Jeff Locke pitching against Zach Greinke tonight, and the Brewers needing a win to lock up home field advantage against the D'backs, they're almost guaranteed to finish with 72 wins. If they lose, they would pass up any team that currently has 71 wins and that wins today. If they somehow, improbably win, any team that has 72 wins and loses today would pass them.
Teams the Pirates could "pass"
Royals: They play in Minnesota against the hapless Twins. Bruce Chen (12-8, 3.98) opposes Carl Pavano (8-13, 4.48).
Cubs: They play in San Diego, with Ryan Dempster (10-13, 4.53) facing Wade LeBlanc (4-6, 4.83).
Teams that could "pass" the Pirates
Marlins: They host the Gnats and some guy named Strasburg (0-1, 2.00). The struggling Chris Volstad (5-12, 4.96) goes for Florida.
Rockies: They're at San Francisco, sending Drew Pomeranz (1-1, 5.68) against Eric Surkamp (2-1, 5.32).
