Is there any chance at all that there's an afterlife?

The best part about the eternal debate about the existence of an afterlife/God, is that only one side will have the opportunity to gloat if proven correct.

Think about it...

If there really is an afterlife, and it does fall under the popular religious belief, then those of us who shunned it will be burning in hell, and perpetually tortured in agonizing horror for the REST OF ETERNITY!!! And we are going to go, "Wow, this really fuckin' sucks. Man was I wrong!" And the folks up in Heaven will be like, "We told you so, suckers!"

But...

If there really is no afterlife. There is just a return the same empty nothingness that was our existence before birth. Not only do the people that were right all along have no opportunity to celebrate that we were correct in what was easily the most important decision that we ever made, but the ones expecting to be reunited with their loved ones and frolic around with wild lions and shit, are not given even a moment to be made aware that they were wrong. To know that they essentially wasted entire aspects of their lives worshiping some make believe deity.

It doesn't really seem fair, does it? :moped:

Oh how I envy that God-blind bunch. As much as I fear death, I can obviously accept and understand that once I'm dead it will be no harm to me; I won't know I'm dead, I won't know anything. It's that nothingness I'm afraid of.

I'd love to live a life without fear; even if I was wrong, I'd never fucking know it anyway.
 
That fear is inherent in nature, David. I don't believe it comes down to a belief in God in the classic sense. Whether by design or evolutionary survival, the fear of death was instilled in every animal on the planet. The fact that other animals don't have the capability of contemplating their existence and origin is what makes me envious. Can you imagine just being able to gleefully slop in the mud all day without a care in the world? There is no sense wasting your time worrying about something that you'll never be able to know and certainly can't control. Just make the best of your time here.

However I believe there could be many things about the nature of time and consciousness that we don't fully understand, the upshot of which could be reincarnations after this life as we know it.

But I don't know. As an agnostic, I consider it very important to admit I don't know things when, in fact, I don't.

My best guess at this point is that there is no afterlife. But I don't know so I have to say there is a chance.

Right. If you look at it from a probability perspective, then there certainly is a chance. However, there is a chance of virtually anything occuring after death.

I try not to let it get to me, and most of the time it doesn't. Just sucks when you get to thinking about it, haha.
 
I'm a big believer in reincarnation, have been for some time now. It occurs to me that I've been a psychological mess since before I can remember, at least according to the stories of my early childhood from my relatives. This leads me to conclude that I was very poorly erased from my last life. Same concept as irrational phobias, we have to get these from somewhere, no one is just born being terrified of spiders, ya know?
 
Why does everyone who is simple minded enough to believe in the bible also believe that we will suffer in hell? I was listening to a comedian the other day and he made a logical assumption out of it that was so hilarious

So Jesus and Satan were arch enemies and Jesus wrote a book telling us about all his bullshit and if we didnt listen to him we'd get sent to hell where we'd suffer and burn for all eternity. Well lets think of this situation logically. Satan didnt write a book and why would god want to make him look good? If you lied,cheated,and deceived people your whole life why is the Devil going to be mad at you? Your going to being fvcking pals. Hell where all the drugs and whores are going to be. Whats going to be in heaven? Your grandmother.....
