House's Elton John thread video thread got me thinking about artists.. I know music changes with the generations and lets face it, "rock and roll" isnt what it used to be, but Lets get an honest list of artists who would have a Really hard time making it today, but were big 20-30+yrs ago.. In other words, their shit was overrated then and makes you cringe today and you know their style wouldnt sell records today...

Bruce Springsteen... fucking shoot me in the head if i ever hear born in the usa again...awful .. could he sell albums today? i say NO

Elton John would do okay because he sucks dick...not a great voice, but writes pretty good shit...still, he will get the gay vote

Aerosmith sounds a little bit better than a garage rock band, to me... and man, I personally love some BeeGees, but fuck i dont think would do very well either

Looking at artists 20-30 years ago, it they weren't emulated today, i doubt they could make it. MTV changed much of the rock I listened to for exposure and it was with bad results. Bon Jovi would succeed today because he has a crossover audience in country now. It looks like Motley Crue is following that same path. Artists who had the gay appeal would have the same success today (Elton John, Culture Club, KD Lang). Political music always does well (Rage Against The Machine, Springsteen, U2). Dance pop never goes away like madonna. Country has a very loyal fanbase.

A few of the biggest names from 1985-95 era:

Phil Collins - I say no, nothing really original
Peter Gabriel - yes
Duran Duran - hmmmm, i say no.
Talking Heads - quirky enough that influenced a lot of college rock, yes
GnR - doubt it
Janet Jackson - yes
Wham/George Michael - yes
Aerosmith (post-drugs era - Love in an Elevator and after) - Hell no, as bad as Phil Collins
Mariah Carey - yes
Whitney Houston - yes because of her bloodlines if nothing else
REM - tough as their commercial success really alienated their fanbase. I'll lean to yes as they influenced a lot of bands.
