Got a new family doctor here in windsor, the doc at the hospital recommended getting checked for colon cancer.

Ill be having a colonoscopy in the near future.

im already convinced I have colon cancer, every little pain in my abdomen comfirms my fear.

RELAX PLOMMER. Dude, you are going to give yourself cancer just by worrying about it. There's a ton of things that can be wrong with you.

No problem at all. I have talked about it freely, extensively (ad nauseum?) on the forums for years.

My drug of choice was: everything. Not avoiding the question; that is really the only answer. Alcohol was a constant and pot/hash were usually in the picture but the first time I went into treatment, the main problem was prescription relaxants (ativan). I have had extensive but sporadic issues with opiates, from OTC codeine to heroin. I did so much LSD as a young teen that I had to stop taking it because it was seriously scrambling my brain.

I had extended cocaine binges. I stole narcotics from a pharmaceutical company I worked for. Bennies and speed.

Everything.



I got clean and sober in 1990 and had one big relapse since then. Currently I have been continuously clean and sober for about 10 years I guess.

Thank you for answering. I would be interested in your story with the benzos. I am currently attempting to wean off Ativan after 7? years and have read the withdrawl can be worse than that of opiates (which I have also been thru) Any advice? I do not abuse the Ativan. It's just something I have been taking for some time. To be honest, I forget why it was prescribed in the first place. I think to help me sleep (along with ambien) when I was quitting Percocet. In any case, my new doctor thinks I should not have been on them for so long and should quit, but I am not sure how long it will take me to taper off of them...or even if I want to.


That's awesome on all your clean time. Very Impressive. You should pat yourself on the back daily.

I hate to be an ominous cloud but I never had as much trouble getting off something as that ativan. But I was abusing them to a gross extent. I guess it would probably help if I could tell you the exact dosage I was taking but it was 25+ years ago and it was a hazy time. As I recall I was taking like 8-10 pills a day of the strongest formulation they came in FWIW.

It was tough.

Hopefully I can inject some good news for you though. Apart from you probably not taking near as much as I was, it doesn't sound like you have any time constraints. I had to get off them fairly fast because of shit going on at work and a set date for getting into treatment yada yada. Way too fast.

Tapering/weening is a great idea if you can do it. Sounds like you are free to take your time. In theory, you should be able to go slowly and gradually enough that you never feel anything in particular. Even at that, it shouldn't take crazy long.

What else can I say? If you don't know why you are taking them, I sure don't. So I have no opinion on the appropriateness of stopping as far as that goes.

Possible side effects are pretty much what you would expect. It's a relaxant so if you start cutting back, you may feel less relaxed. There could be difficulty sleeping. There could be emotional issues such as random crying jags.

It can all be gotten over, no doubt.

Those are my initial thoughts off the top of my head.

No no, I didn't see it that way at all. I was just trying to think how best to respond. It's just a mess, since I take Wellbutrin, I have to be very careful in coming off the Ativan or it can cause all sorts of problems. Luckily Ativan is one pill that I think mentally I can do without...it's just the physical w/d that has me worried but like you said, I have the luxury of time to taper.
