So I am learning.

The place where I last worked I was surrounded with skilled tradespeople, more of them white Canadian than not. A bunch of them are about to be turned loose on the job market with the impending plant shutdown.

Not saying this proves or disproves anything - it is a ridiculously small sample - just saying I had no idea there was an issue.

No pun intended or not directed to Muddy, but good drywall mudders (drywall finishers) are a dying breed. Someone can earn a lot of money working in this area and it would be in a warm and dry environment.

My neighbor taught me how to do drywall mud. So far I have replaced two walls and a ceiling in our house. I'm not fast but the real trick is to work your mud with the mixer really good and then use a good sturdy taping knife to apply it. I scraped all the textured finish from the dining room and replaced it with smooth finish and now I'm moving my operations in the bathrooms.

From my experience finishing drywall must not be easy! Had part of the basement made into a bedroom and working boss contractor had 2 workers do walls and screwed up the job! Boss had to come back to redo it himself taking up a whole day! Had kitchen redone and guy did a perfect job! Always thought i could do myself, but probably not!

Good stuff Saul. There certainly is a knack to it, but once you master it, you can make good coin doing it for a living. Not that you would make a career change in this point in your life.

Start with a small wall first. Remove existing drywall you want replaced. Measure and cut new drywall. Nail new dry wall into studs. Apply joint compound and tape at the joints. Apply mud over joints and sand when it's dry. Apply mud over entire wall and sand when it's dry. Depending on your skills you may have to sand and apply mud at rough spots a couple times but it's not really rocket science.

Maybe if being a world famous, rich composer does not work out for me, I should look at taking up one of these skilled trades.

I wonder if it is too late for me.

Muddy, it's not too late at all. Most kids these days are lazy sumofbiches. I bet many trade contractors would hire you over some kid who would basically be full of attitude and with a piss poor work ethic. Let your EI run down some and in the new year go to the employment place and speak to a person about extending your EI and go to trade school for free. Hell drop in tomorrow adn maybe you can start trade school in January at the local community college. The gov will most likely extend your EI and pay your tuition etc.

Thanks. At this point I'm still learning doing it in my own house. I wouldn't do it as a career. Same thing when I built a deck and a fence in my house. I also replaced part of the hardwood floor that had some damage. If you show me how to do something once I can pick it up from there. I'm just doing it to learn and not necessarily to use it as a career.

There is a knack to finishing drywall. I'm pretty handy and have done a lot of my own renos. The first 2 dudes who did your basement were likely kids with ZERO skills and also mechanically challenged.

I don't know about Canada Muddy but here in the US Home Depot and Lowes have free lessons on how to install a bunch of things in the house. The first step is to buy the tools. If you have the tools then you will be motivated to learn how to use them to fix things. It's like when you have a piano in the house and you get motivated to write music. If you didn't have the piano you probably wouldn't write music.
