half point calcs

FreeFall is going to make his own half point calculator for the nba. I was wondering what kind of consideration for the data I need? Should I find 1Q 2Q 3Q 4Q OT points going back as far as I can? Or should I only go back say 5 years because at some point the amount of samples dones't matter?

I guess my initial question is how do I know how much data I need before I can start believing the information it spits out. I'm sure I'll have more as I produce this, but lets start with this question first .

I've now got some numbers in a csv formet ( I can change this if need be and re scrape ). I assume I load this into excell and have it make a graph of the distrobution? Will it do numbers this big? Or should I just have it sum the quarters and then count the occurance of each number and divive by total scores?
