just a bit too much movement on his fastball, which gets him in trouble....


maybe a bit of a head case like Kip Wells was also...... but I wouldn't be suprised to see him put forth a good half season before he gets hurt

A bit optimistic there, a winning season should be the primary goal and with their financial resources it's hard to see when that is going to come.

yeah I was obviously kidding.

until the pirates get rid of the nuttings ownership, thiings will stay pretty bleak.

although with the young core they have now, at least no stars need to be traded in the next 2-3 years.

McCutch, Tabata, Walker, Alvarez are the start of a small window of a youth movement that could be open for a few years.

The revenue issue is the biggest problem for the Pirates, the payroll is only ~$40 million which is primarily due to low attendance rather than the owners not wanting to invest. But considering their pretty bad recent past, their farm system is nowhere as good as it needs to be and nowhere as good as the Rays or the Royals.

I disagree that it is not about the owners not wanting to invest. The Pirates owners are pocketing alot of other team's fans money and luxury tax $ from the Yanks and Red Sox.

these guys have made a great investment on the Pirates, but they are not committed (although there has be rhetoric the payroll will increase) to fielding a MLB product for a top 5 venue/ballpark in baseball.


Pirates fans will go through the turnstyles when they have a great on the field product. They did back in the late 80's and 90's. It may take a really really good/exciting team to get that turnout again. but eventually it can happen.

as far as the minor league system goes. They obviously aren't anywhere as close to the Royals, but no one is.

They do have some interesting impact players coming. and they've been doing better in the drafts and having less bad luck with injuries

I agree with that, the next CBA should do something about this - it's not good for the game when the Pirates are taking the excess revenue share payments and taking them as profit. From the documents leaked last August, the Pirates are being way overly subsidized and there should be something put in place to ensure that a club can not have a net income of $14 million while taking $40 million from revenue share.

But with the Pirates, they have been bad for so long that it's going to be difficult to get a loyal fanbase back especially when Pittsburgh are sporting very good NHL and NFL teams. To get any free agents to the club, they are going to need to overpay (aka the Jayson Werth effect) and have an extended period of success (which for them translates as winning seasons and actually being in contention for the NL Central at the time in August) before sports fans in Pittsburgh will change their preferences and turn out to see them. Even a reasonably good farm system won't get them there - the Royals have by far the best farm system at the moment but for them to be in contention with them will take the combination of prospects all coming together around the same time and more importantly, as a low revenue team, in the relatively small window when they are under club control.
