I went as a child, I guess you could say I was forced to go, although I never really complained and even enjoyed it at times. Once I turned about 18 I stopped going, I guess because I was away for college. I have been back once or twice, but only for Easter or something like that.

What say you?

Same. Forced as a child. The only difference was I definitely complained and I have no memory of ever enjoying it even slightly.

There is a scene from The Simpsons where they are just getting home from church on Sunday and Bart and Lisa are giddy and celebrating because it is the best time of the week. When asked why, Lisa says because it is the longest time until there is more church.

That was my general feeling.

I definitely never enjoyed church service. I was talking more along the lines of activities with the Youth group, or something like that. I had fun at some of those events is what I meant. In terms of church service, my thoughts were similar to mudcat.

Having said that. I go to a church every Thursday. That's where my addictions recovery meeting is. I have probably been to more than a thousand such meeting since 1990 and the majority of them have been in churches. Some of the stuff I have seen in these meetings has been minor miracles. I have seen great things happen in churches. I have a lot of gratitude towards churches.

But I have no interest in their actual designed purpose.

I love churches, I do. Churches rock when taken out of the Mickey Mouse Jesus/God context. My favorite church is St-Germain-des-Prs in Paris, it has columns in there that date back to the 8th century and it is the house of Ren Descartes' tomb. Ren Fokken Descartes, Mr. Science himself.

This is my fancy self and my twin and my Mom in front of said church, right before we stepped in. I'd been there over 10 years ago and couldn't wait to go back in.

Churches :greencheck:

I hate 99.6% of Churches. what's the point of wasting valuable nfl sunday going to some "blessing clubhouse" meeting.

I think the original intentions of the "church" was to come and meet with me all days of the week, or whenever, but especially when I need the church.

NOT for 2 boring hrs on Sunday, rinse, wash, repeat

Matty, it seems as if I am always taking issue with you maybe subconsciously I am but it’s not a conscious act at least. However you always seem to say something that pushes on a nerve with me in one form or another.

I get that you don’t believe in God/Jesus or perhaps traditional Christian religious beliefs and that’s perfectly acceptable but why must you say it like those types are of lesser intelligence or maybe adulthood or whatever it is that makes them not equal?

Maybe I am reading too much into it but there always seem to be at least an element of derogatory tone to your words when speaking on or about this.

Science supports evolution ok so great. Traditional Christian beliefs are based on the Bible and it can be reasonably argued that since the Bible was interpreted by man it could just as easily have been misinterpreted or even worse, completely falsified all together. You could not get an valid argument based on any facts what-so-ever out of me there.

Where is the harm though in people keeping faith alive. Why are they so much lower on the scale of intellectual equality because they choose to worship a God in Heaven?

I don’t understand with all the science that supports drug use and alcohol abuse does harm to you body that people still do it and I don’t partake but that doesn’t mean I think I am better than they are or that I can’t accept them as equals.

I’m not trying to change you Matty, just trying to understand the way that mind works.

I don't think God of the bible is such a cool story. Sounds like a real prick to me - jealous, needy, domineering. "Worship me or I may kill you. Do not LOOK at another God or you will catch a beatin'."

Amazingly like an abusive husband, imo. Or you could say very indicative of the way lesser evolved men thought (think). Coincidence?

No thanks. Mickey Mouse is wayyyy cooler.

Herman to answer your original question, I too was forced as a youth but never go now. I don't have a problem with people who choose to go or how they worship it's just not for me. I personally think a church (temple) much like faith itself is whatever gives you hope in life and that doesn't necissarily equate to brick and mortar structure or even a recognized religion.

the problem with religion is how they have manipulated by the people in power throughout our history to fit different agendas. due to this i am unable to see what is true and what is bs.

if you look at all the religions some (nearly unanimous) universal concepts can be derived...only in those would i ever put any thought of following or listening to

I was dragged to Catholic church most Sundays throughout my youth.

I got through the long communions by playing this game where I watched all of the girls in the communion line, pictured them naked, and decided which ones I would want to have sex with. Communion was easily the most sexually-charged period of each weeks service.
