Here we go. Hopefully these big box stores will put an end to this constant Frenchie silliness in quebec.

"Quebec's language watchdog, The Office Qubcois de la Langue Franaise, wants the retailers to change their signs to either give themselves a generic French name or add a slogan or explanation that reflects what it is they're selling.

Some interesting comments from the readers.

They shouldn't force them, but it makes complete sense for those companies to add a French element to their names.

The OQLF should merely point out that companies who have done it enjoy much stronger brand loyalty in Quebec. Pharmaprix (Shoppers Drug Mart) is seen as a local business just because of the name change.

Canadian Tire did it a different way, by filling their ads with local actors and generally integrating Quebec culture really well. (Of course, that's pretty easy to do when you're a major hockey gear retailer.)

But yeah, once again, the OQLF is trying to overdo it.

Fok these anal-retentive foks.

BTW the companies mentioned are being extremely fair here. They're asking the courts to decide whether the OQLF has the right to make them Frenchify their names - if the court says they do, they promised to comply.

Well played you multinational foks.
