I subscribe to Shaw Direct - Satellite service.

They are offering a good deal on a PVR. I am unfamiliar with PVR'ing, NetFlix, and other streaming setups.

Looking to get setup with a PVR and/or Netflix and would like to hear from those here that use PVR and other ways to stream, watch and record.

Got a 50 inch HD TV that is hardly ever tuned to a HD signal.

Trying to get with the times.

Help appreciated.

I don't know if I am qualified to chime in or not. Probably not.

I have something. I don't know if it is a PVR or DVR. I don't think I stream either. I just record stuff off my TV channels. I think that's a different thing than streaming?

My PVR/DVR :)dunno:) machine came free when I upgraded my Rogers bundle.

Anyway, I'm probably off topic here so I'll just stop at this point.

Bell Fibe + PVR and I have a cheap Blu-Ray player with Wi-Fi/Netflix/Youtube that works really well. 60 bucks.

I also have this D-Link WiDi receiver thingie that I never use cause it's pretty shitty/laggy. I can stream my laptop's display and sound to it, in an ideal world. It never works correctly.

I replaced that POS with a 20ft HDMI cable ($10 shipping included) that I run between the computer and the TV when I want to play back videos from my laptop. I could also share the vids over my WLAN so the Blu-Ray player can stream them but I can't be bothered.

Wires are good.

I don't know if I use all the features. Smart money is on no.

I just tape stuff from my TV listings. I have about a zillion channels now. It's good because you aren't actually punching in starting/finishing times - you just grab whatever from the listings - but sometimes the listings aren't synched up properly so I end up losing the last minute of things.

There is potential for some real disaster there. Think about it. Fortunately it doesn't happen that often - and most things seem to run over and over on the various channels so you can go back and get whatever you missed without waiting long.

What else can I say? It will only tape two things at once. And if it is taping 2 things, it won't let you watch something else on TV. That comes into play occasionally.

But the whole thing is a big upgrade over my old combo DVD/VHS system.

Thanks muddaaay and monsier rein, this is helpful.

We are definitely leaning to pvr.

Matty, can I get a pvr that isn't "locked" to Shaw or does it have to be a Shaw pvr because that is my sat provider?

Also, what tablet do yo recommend? Win 8?

There is a downside though. As far as I know you can't record something and take it over to your friend's house to watch.

Forum smarty-pantses used to give me a hard time about my VCR but it could do that no problemo. That was something I did frequently which I don't do now.

(Actually I still have the VCR and could do it if I could remember the steps but I have grown lazy and stupid.)

They need to have it so you can just plug in a flashdrive dammit. It's not that rare a thing to want to watch something with a friend.

No idea about the PVR plommer. I got mine for free when I signed a contract. I would think that there are generic/bootlegged PVR's out there that sync with the various providers but I don't know for sure.

Windows 8 on a tablet is neat but the Surface is big and heavy. Depends what you use it for I s'pose. I love my iPad Mini cause it's thin as a pancake and can easily be held for a long time with one hand. *wink wink nudge nudge*

I admit, I love to read books while wiping my ass.

True Muddy. In your case the simplest solution is to download the content off a torrent website like thepiratebay.se. Actually you'll find pretty much anything on thepiratebay.se.

I was downloading tons of stuff off pirate bay and received a letter from Teksavvy telling me to be careful as the new copyright laws are now in effect in Canada.

Matty, the tablet is not for me its for my computer savvy mother, who is used to Windows.
How difficult is it for a dedicated Windows user to figure out an ipad?

Don't buy/choose/recommend technology for your Mom. She'll hold you responsible for everything that she can't figure out.

Is my advice to you.

BTW a Windows tablet is nothing like a Windows computer. Every tablet pretty much works the same way.

They're not Mom-proof though. Nothing is.

Afraid I can't really help. My boss has an Asus Transformer Pad thingie that he loves. Most people I know own full-size iPads.

I say unless she already owns an iOS device, get her one of the mainstream androids. Samsung, Google or ASUS. Pay attention to battery life.
