David Stern was pissed that Duncan, Ginobili, Parker and Green were sent home instead of going to Miami to play against the Heat Thursday night. The reason given was that they needed to be rested as they have already played a hectic stretch of games and had more important games coming up.
It was reported during and immediately after the game, a game which the Spurs lost but a game which basically went to the wire even with basically all bench players against a fully loaded Heat team, that Sterns would dish out some serious sanctions. Today we learned those sanctions turned out to be 250k in fines against the Spurs.
First, how can Sterns or anyone else not associated with a team dictate how a coach handles his team? The Spur's could have said the players were coming down with the flu or given any number of reasons but they were honest and simply said the guys needed to rest up. Maybe that's lame but what right does Stern have to be Overlord?
Most likely San Antonio will appeal and if there is any justice you would think they could win but that would be besides the point.
Sterns has done good and he's done bad as commissioner but this seems to be out of bounds, at least to me. Sure there probably were some pissed off fans who expected to see a complete Spur's team but were they more upset that Duncan and company weren't on the court or more excited that their Heat team won?
Maybe I am wrong in my thinking so what do you guys think?
