Accused coach requests sex addiction help
DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ga. —
A Lithia Springs High School teacher accused of having sexual contact with a student has requested help for a sex addiction.Channel 2’s Sophia Choi went to a Douglas County court Thursday, where Dennis Brown apologized.
“I've not done anything like this before, and I'm just sorry,” Brown said.
Investigators said Brown, 52, admitted to having sexual contact with a 17-year-old female student in September -- during school, but off-campus. Investigators said the student involved told them after exchanging sexual text messages, the two met up at Lithia Springs Park and Ride on Lee Road.
“It was just bad decisions on my part," Brown said in court.
His lawyer said he has been cooperative in the investigation and has requested help for a sex addiction.
“Given the opportunity to bond out, I'm going to personally go and seek that help. I've got to do something. This is not me,” said Brown.
He said the encounter was a one-time deal, but the judge didn’t buy it.
“I have a concern about the fact that there might be other victims based on your admission today that you have a problem," Judge Barbara Caldwell said.
She denied him bond.
Investigators said Brown has taught at other schools in the state, and they are looking into potential other victims. Brown has also been a police officer in Warner Robbins and Tennessee. He was also a principal at Villa Rica and Hart County high schools.
A school representative said Brown resigned from his position at the school. He is charged with custodial sexual assault.
