Have any of us ended up in the profession we dreamed of being in when we were younger?

As a kid, I remember wanting to own a bar. Not lying. I still remember meeting a bartender at one of my uncles parties in Long Island as a kid and idolizing the guy.

I always wanted to write as well. Unfortunately, I suck at self motivation. I have gotten better at it as of late. Life has become more retrospective for me. Finding the subtle nuances in my daily affairs to be my comfort.

Oh, also wanted to be a baseball player. Yeah, that didn’t pan out.
 
I remember wanting to be a train or bus driver. I would take a record and spin it in my lap like it was a steering wheel.
Also wanted to be a hockey/soccer/baseball player.
Eh, happy with my "profession" in retrospect.
Bus driving these days, you gotta deal with a lot of bums, and snow :eek:
And pro athletes. I couldn't handle dealing with coaches, and people telling you what to do :hey:
 
I did wanna be a gambler from the 1st day I went to the dog track when I was about 20. It took me seven long years before I could make a living. :dunno: If that counts

If we're talking about early childhood dreams, I did not become an astronaut so no.

But I'm doing roughly what my teenage self thought I would end up doing. Can't complain.

Thats actually impressive. Not the astronaut part, but that you are doing something you wanted to do as a teenager.
 
Yeah. I knew I wouldn't become a rock star cause I had the stage presence of a rock, but I wanted to do something music-adjacent. And I definitely wanted to be my own boss.

did you take any college courses in that, or did it come naturally?

I think I have a corporate face? Job interviews are all about appearances. I landed my first job at a dotcom during my last year of undergrad, while the vast majority of my classmates were working in bookstores and call centers. I have zero merit - it was all about my serious-looking adult face.

I was decent enough at faking it, and then I was not-quite-useless-enough to fire. But make no mistake, I was a pretty shitty employee 90% of the time. Not a team player, fairly antisocial outside of my immediate department, passive aggressive, insubordinate, the whole lot. It amazes me that I managed to stay longer than 3 months at any one job.

:yes: Ping pong champion, and I won the office football pool 3 years in a row.

As long as it wasn't related to work, I was the man.
 
When I was 12 I said to myself - "self, when you grow up you should try to be the most tech savvy guy with a law degree and 200k in student loans at a mid size firm full of aging elitist Manhattan lawyers who couldn't hack it in big law." "Theyll not respect your degree and theyll treat you like a mix between a high functioning paralegal and a low functioning IT professional and theyll promise that you can never progress professionally."

Welp 12 year old self. We did it.
