Thread: What's In A Word?

  1. #1

    Default What's In A Word?

It’s not really a hobby but there are times I stop and ponder certain words. There are many words that depending on how your use it have multiple meanings. There are words that have more of an impact than other words. There are words that can make you appear intelligent or reveal that you are a complete moron depending their use. There are words that inspire and words that destroy us.

There are many words that I like and have powerful persuasion when used properly. For example “thanks” can mean so much when the person hearing it or reading it isn’t very accustom to receiving it. Obviously “love” is a very powerful word and can be used in a variety of ways and when used and supported with actions can be maybe the most impactful word ever.

There is a word that fascinates me above all other words though. It may well be the most versatile word out there. Depending on its context this one simple unassuming word can be, inquisitive, accusatory, rebellious, regretful, reflective, remorseful, even motivational.

The mere reason behind the word itself has caused people to invent, create and revolutionize. Defining the word has put criminals in jail, presidents in the White House and men on the moon. When some have decided to answer to this word, slaves were freed, bras have been burned and equalities delivered and wrongs have been righted. When people have chosen to seek out the ultimate meaning of this word walls have crumbled, records have been broken and milestones have been reached. Turn to this word in a personal demeanor and self-awareness can be achieved, demons can be expelled and true understanding made possible.

The merits of this word go mainly unnoticed, only the answers from it ever really get recognized but if not for this word many things, much of history, our very existence would be dramatically different.

What word can be so small yet have such enormous and unending possibilities,…………………………………………….WHY!

Words can be fun. One of my favorite words is twat. I mainly use it as an epithet, either on its own or combined with the word dopey.

    Dopey twat.

I was thinking the other day that there are a couple of words I commonly type, and for some reason I spell them wrong almost every single time. I have always been a fairly good speller too.

    Convenient and similar.

I used to place well in spelling bees as a child, and now I find myself doubting the spelling of the most simplest of words. What is to blame more? Drugs/alcohol or Firefox spellchecker?

Wallyballs you ever find yourself typing the most common of words and for some reason, this particular time, it confounds you how peculiar that word is?

This happens to me sometimes. Like the word "the." Just stare at it for a bit. Cocky little fellow is odd beyond belief and he just doesn't give a damn.

What pisses me off is when people use letters for numbers. Like when they write "twelve times three equals thirty six" instead of "12 x 3 = 36".

i have the same problem with certain words, despite being a pretty good speller, just can't get used to them: judgment, commitment and sacrilegious are three that always get me.

I screw up and write seperate all the time. I wasn't even sure how to misspell it for this post. I had about a 50/50 chance of getting it right - which would have been all wrong.

Derailed thread as usual. The purpose of the thread was the power of words not the improper spelling of them. Granted spelled incorrectly they tend to lose their effectiveness.

    Seriously, honestly, I did yes.

It is not surprising that the thread would either be very short or else derailed. It was not an OP that really lent itself to a long discussion. Not that there was anything wrong with it; but about the only apt response is, yes, so true so true. Or perhaps, yes, interesting.

I guess people could start tossing out other words they find powerful. It's hard to imagine this group really exploring that in earnest but there are some comic possibilities. Now that I'm thinking along those lines I may return to it in that capacity.

This thread was created at a time when I was still considered a literary craftsman in gambling forumville. A time before I sought the approval of my fellow posters and the posting styles they preferred.
